Abstract:

The article is devoted to the study of the legal protection of the oceans, which is an important component of the global life support system and seems to be a positive factor that opens up opportunities for sustainable development. It is no coincidence that the UN initiated and implemented the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea, which is one of the most comprehensive instruments of international law. In this regard, the author emphasized the importance of the special mechanisms of the law of the sea implemented by the UN: the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea under the UN Office of Legal Affairs; the UN specialized agency, the International Maritime Organization; United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In conclusion, it is noted that at present the UN, through the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, is actively pedaling the effective implementation of Goal 14 in the field of sustainable development "Preserve and rationalize the use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development."
