Abstract:

The strategic value of the described territories is associated with the bioresources of the Sea of Okhotsk, shipping routes to the Pacific Ocean, the military-strategic nature, as well as the political-geographical aspect. The article is devoted to the lack of unity of political and legal views of representatives of the Russian Federation and Japan regarding several border island and archipelagic facilities and pushes for a non-standard solution from an international legal point of view, possibly to the conclusion of a special border treaty and, undoubtedly, to the demilitarization of the islands. The author proposes a number of ways to solve the problem, but emphasizes that international law should become the only tool for resolving these issues, and the governments of the Russian Federation and Japan - the only subjects for its application.
